WHO IS THIS ONLINE PROGRAMME FOR?

Class 3B or Class 4 Surgical laser operators, or Staff present during Laser procedures in a surgical setting.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This is a comprehensive laser safety certification programme for surgical staff. It covers minimum requirements before additional laser operator training (hands on instructional) should be sought.

All users and operators of Class 3B or Class 4 Lasers should hold a laser safety certificate. This content references: AS/NZS 4173: 2018.

• Understand how New Zealand Healthcare legislation applies to laser operators

• Relate laser hazards to the eye, and understand how protection distances and measures can prevent ocular hazards

• Gain knowledge on personal protective equipment types and levels of protection required when working with a Class 3B or Class 4 laser

• Learn about the laser controls that should be in place to prevent unauthorised access, accidental exposure or risk of hazards related to lasers

• Understand what role the laser safety officer plays in a laser workplace

• Gain knowledge on what to look out for to maintain and ensure the laser is safe to be used in the workplace

• Use additional resources provided to develop a safe use of laser policy and gain information that will help laser operators and laser assistants in a surgical setting be aware of both legal requirements, and AS/NZS laser safety best practices.
